From 22 March through 19 April 2010, a small exhibit entitled “Squaring the Circle” will be on display in McFarlin Library’s Special Collections at the University of Tulsa. Curated by Kathryn Webb, a student at TU, the exhibit features the gift books Joyce gave to Harriet Shaw Weaver as he struggled to explain to her the work that would become Finnegans Wake. These personally inscribed editions include studies of mythology, history, and philosophy, ranging from Vico’s Principi di Scienza Nuova to Bérard’s Les Phéniciens et L’Odyssée. Taken together, they offer a unique and provocative way of mapping one of Joyce’s own attempts to elucidate his work for a devoted yet often bewildered reader.
