The City Archives of Munich now possess two copies of Erwin von Busse’s prompt book (also known as prompt copy or prompt script). For those who are unaware, Erwin von Busse, a German stage director and painter, directed the premiere opening of Joyce’s Exiles on 7 August 1919 at the Munich Theatre. These prompt books, which are master copies of the script and score, contain all the actors’ blocking as well as the stage manager’s technical and lighting cues. The discovery of these artifacts will hopefully continue to deepen our understanding of Joyce’s works and his reception.
