News reached us late today about the untimely death of Tracey Schwarze, Professor of English and Vice-Provost at Christopher Newport University. A creative and meticulous scholar, Tracey was the author of a number of articles on Joyce as well as the 2002 monograph Joyce and the Victorians. This book offered a compelling and original study of the ways in which the work of various Victorian novelists helped shape and at the same time constrain Joyce’s major works. In addition to her scholarly work so well known to the Joyce world, she was an effective administrator who had served as Chair of English at Christopher Newport before being appointed Vice Provost in 2007. Her death from cancer came far too soon and she will be missed by the Joyce community.
The comments section of this post will remain open for those who might want to share their memories of Tracey with the readers of Raising the Wind.
