Joyce at Sotheby’s by jjqblog

The Joyce family passport mentioned in an earlier post was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in London on 14 July to a private collector for £61,250 (or just under $100,000).  The auction also included several other Joyce-related items, including a letter to Ford Madox Ford that sold for £12,500 and an autographed second impression of Ulysses that went for £3,750.

Alas, the Joyce items were not not the most prized item in the auction.  That particular distinction went to the earliest surviving manuscript of Jane Austen’s unpublished The Watsons, which went to an unknown collector for just a hair under one million GBP.  It was rivaled only by an item from the Sheffield FC archives sold to finance the club’s new stadium: the earliest known list of the laws of soccer, which turned out to be worth £881,250.
