One of Joyce’s earliest works, an essay entitled Day of the Rabblement, will be auctioned off for £8,000 later this month at Whyte’s Auction house in Dublin.  The piece, written while Joyce was at student at University College, Dublin in 1901, was originally banned because of its mention of a novel, Il Fuoco by Gabriel D’Annzio, which was banned by the Vatican.  Joyce’s piece was also critical of the Irish Literary Theatre’s nationalism and provincialism.  Here is a link to an article on the auctioning of Joyce’s piece.
