Charlene Matthews, a book artist and binder in Los Angeles, has produced an artistic edition of Ulysses based on the text of Sylvia Beach’s original Shakespeare and Company version. The book Matthews has produced is somewhat difficult to describe: it consists of thirty-eight seven foot tall poles onto which Matthews wrote every word of Ulysses using complex methods and textual divisions. The project was completed on October 30, 2013 after two years of work. Here you can see images of the poles and read an interview with Matthews about her process and motivation for undertaking the art project.
